# Facebook Link Preview & Sharing Debugger Alternative

> Meta's Sharing Debugger needs a Facebook account. Paste a URL here to see the Facebook card and test the image against Meta's documented minimum of 600×315, the 1.91:1 ratio and the 8 MB limit.

## What Facebook needs

- Facebook reads `og:title`, `og:description`, `og:image`, `og:url`, `og:type` and `og:site_name`.
- Image: 1200×630 recommended, at least 600×315, a ratio near 1.91:1, up to 8 MB.
- `og:image:width` and `og:image:height` let Facebook lay out the card on the very first share, before it has downloaded the image.
- The crawler is `facebookexternalhit`; it must get the page without a login, a cookie wall or a bot challenge.

## Facebook link preview not showing or not updating?

- Changed the tags? Paste the URL into Sharing Debugger and press "Scrape Again" — Facebook caches the preview until then.
- Facebook caches images by URL: a new image needs a new image URL (a new file name or a query string), not the same address with new content.
- Below 600×315 the image is shown small or dropped; keep the URL absolute and the file under 8 MB.
- Allow `facebookexternalhit` in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN bot rules.
- A "missing fb:app_id" warning in the Debugger does not stop the preview from working.

## Questions

### Is this the same as the Facebook Sharing Debugger?

It reads the same tags and shows a close version of the Facebook card, without a Facebook account. It cannot clear Facebook's cache — only Sharing Debugger can make Facebook fetch the page again.

### What size should a Facebook share image be?

Meta recommends 1200×630, documents 600×315 as the minimum and 8 MB as the file limit, with a ratio close to 1.91:1 to avoid cropping.

### Facebook keeps showing my old image. Why?

Facebook caches both the page's tags and the image by URL. Re-scrape in Sharing Debugger and, if the image changed, publish it under a new URL.
