# Social media image sizes 2026 — every number with its source

> Image sizes for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest: posts, stories, covers, thumbnails, link previews. Each with a source.

Published 2026-11-06 · https://shareglint.com/en/social-media-image-sizes

The key **social media image sizes for 2026**, from the platforms' own documentation: an Instagram feed photo is 1080 pixels wide and 566 to 1440 pixels tall (1.91:1 to 3:4), Meta ads for Stories and Reels are 9:16 at 1440×2560, a LinkedIn background photo is 1584×396, an X header is 1500×500, a YouTube banner is at least 2048×1152, a Pinterest Pin is 1000×1500, and a link preview image (og:image) is 1200×630. Every number links to the platform page we read it on (checked 2026-11-04). Where a platform publishes nothing, we say "does not say" rather than copy a number from a blog.

Two caveats. Some numbers come from **ad** specifications, marked "ads": for organic posts they are the best official guidance, not a promise of identical display. And platforms change numbers without notice: Meta now recommends 1440×2560 for Stories and Reels ads, not the 1080×1920 repeated on many blogs, and Instagram allows a vertical 3:4 in the feed, not just 4:5.

## Link preview (og:image) on every platform

A pasted link shows the `og:image` image. One **1200×630 pixel** file (1.91:1), JPEG or PNG under 600 KB, meets every published requirement. Details, more platforms (WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Mastodon) and an in-browser image checker are on the [OG image size](https://shareglint.com/en/og-image-size) page.

| Platform | Recommended | Minimum | Ratio | Max file | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook | 1200×630 or larger | 600×315 for the large card; 200×200 is the smallest allowed | 1.91:1 | 8 MB | [Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/webmasters/images) |
| LinkedIn | does not say | 1200×627; under 401 px wide — small thumbnail | 1.91:1 | 5 MB | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a521928) |
| X (`summary_large_image`) | does not say | 300×157 (max 4096×4096) | 2:1 | 5 MB; JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF | [X documentation (archive)](https://web.archive.org/web/20260112050218/https://developer.x.com/en/docs/x-for-websites/cards/overview/summary-card-with-large-image) |
| X (`summary`) | does not say | 144×144 (max 4096×4096), square crop | 1:1 | 5 MB | [X documentation (archive)](https://web.archive.org/web/20251216122910/https://developer.x.com/en/docs/x-for-websites/cards/overview/summary) |
| Pinterest (Rich Pins) | does not say | does not say | does not say | does not say; up to six `og:image` tags | [Pinterest Developers](https://developers.pinterest.com/docs/web-features/article-rich-pins/) |
| Instagram, TikTok, YouTube | does not say | does not say | does not say | does not say | no link preview documentation |

The X cards docs are gone from developer.x.com (old addresses redirect to the general docs.x.com page), so we cite Internet Archive copies. Preview missing or stale? See [how to fix and refresh a link preview](https://shareglint.com/en/guides/og-image-not-showing); setting the tags is covered in [what is an Open Graph image](https://shareglint.com/en/guides/what-is-an-open-graph-image).

## Facebook

| Item | Size according to Meta | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Page profile picture | displayed at 176×176 on desktop, 196×196 on smartphones; best quality at 320×320; cropped to a circle | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/125379114252045) |
| Personal profile picture | does not say | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/163248423739693) |
| Page cover photo | desktop 16:9, mobile 2.4:1; at least 400×150; loads fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851×315 under 100 KB; on mobile the profile picture covers about 40 px | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/125379114252045) |
| Personal profile cover photo | at least 720 px wide | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/220070894714080) |

| Post photo (organic) | does not say | — |
| Feed image (ads) | 4:5, 1440×1800; at least 600 px wide and 750 px tall; up to 30 MB, JPG or PNG | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-feed) |
| Feed carousel (ads) | 1:1, at least 1080×1080, 2 to 10 cards | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/carousel/facebook-feed) |
| Stories (ads) | 9:16, 1440×2560; no text or logos in about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom, 6% at the sides | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/facebook-story) |
| Reels (organic) | any ratio and length | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/2862139500770200) |

| Reel cover | does not say | [Facebook Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/2862139500770200) |

For a profile picture or cover with a logo or text, Meta suggests PNG. The help article gives no event image size; the only dimensions on facebook.com (1200×628, alongside 1920×1005) are a Meta AI summary of user posts, not a specification.

## Instagram

| Item | Size according to Meta | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture | does not say | [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/557544397610546) |
| Feed photo | 320–1080 px wide kept as is if the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4 (1080 px wide, 566–1440 px tall); other ratios are cropped; smaller ones enlarged to 320 px, larger scaled to 1080 px | [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1631821640426723) |
| Feed image (ads) | 4:5, 1440×1800; at least 500 px wide | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-feed) |
| Carousel (organic) | up to 20 photos and videos; the chosen orientation applies to all; no ratio given | [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/269314186824048) |
| Carousel (ads) | 4:5 for photos only, 1:1 with videos; at least 1080×1080, 2–10 cards | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/carousel/instagram-feed) |
| Stories (organic) | does not say | — |
| Stories (ads) | 9:16, 1440×2560; keep about 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides free | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-story) |
| Reels | ratio from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 px, 30 fps | [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1038071743007909) |
| Reel cover | 420×654 (1:1.55), PNG or JPG | [Instagram Help](https://help.instagram.com/1038071743007909) |
| Reels (ads) | 9:16, 1440×2560 | [Meta Ads Guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/image/instagram-reels) |

Instagram's Help Center says nothing about link preview images. A vertical 3:4 photo (1080×1440) is now the tallest frame Instagram leaves uncropped; the older 4:5 (1080×1350) still fits.

## LinkedIn

| Item | Size according to LinkedIn | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | from 400×400 to 7680×4320; up to 8 MB; PNG or JPG, no GIFs | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a549049) |
| Profile background photo | recommended 1584×396; up to 8 MB; PNG or JPG | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a549049) |
| Company Page logo | at least 268×268, recommended 400×400; PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a563309) |
| Company Page cover image | 1512×256 (minimum and recommended); PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a563309) |
| Custom image on a Page post with a link | 1.91:1 (1200×627); wider than 200 px, otherwise a small thumbnail on the left | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a563309) |
| Post image (organic) | no dimensions; at most 36 megapixels; GIF, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIF/HEIC (iOS only) | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a564109) |
| Single image ad | landscape 1.91:1 — 1200×628; square 1:1 — 1200×1200; vertical 4:5 — 720×900; up to 5 MB; JPG, PNG or GIF | [LinkedIn Help (ads)](https://www.linkedin.com/help/lms/answer/a426534) |
| Article cover image | optimal 1920×1080, cropped to 16:9; JPEG, JPG, PNG, WEBP, no GIFs | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a521719) |
| Newsletter logo | recommended 300×300 | [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a517940) |

Beware stale numbers: LinkedIn's table (updated in 2026) gives the Company Page cover as 1512×256 — if you see another size, check the article's date. For ads we cite the newer of LinkedIn's two pages (they differ on the vertical image maximum).

## X (Twitter)

| Item | Size according to X | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | recommended 400×400; JPEG, GIF or PNG up to 2 MB; no animated GIFs | [X Help](https://help.x.com/en/managing-your-account/common-issues-when-uploading-profile-photo) |
| Header (banner) | recommended 1500×500; up to 60 px top and bottom may be cropped; no file limit given | [X Help](https://help.x.com/en/managing-your-account/how-to-customize-your-profile) |
| Post image | up to 5 MB; animated GIF up to 5 MB in the app and 15 MB on the web; GIF, JPEG, PNG; a single image between 2:1 and 3:4 is shown in full; no recommended size | [X Help](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/posting-gifs-and-pictures) |
| Image ad | 1:1 — 1200×1200, 1.91:1 — 1200×628; new ratios 4:5 — 1440×1800 and 2:3 — 1080×1620; up to 5 MB, PNG or JPEG | [X Help (ads)](https://help.x.com/en/business-and-advertising/creative-ad-specifications) |

## TikTok

| Item | Size according to TikTok | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | at least 20×20; no recommended size given | [TikTok Help](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7581821549855038008&lang=en) |
| Video (organic) | Help Center does not say; via the API: 360 to 4096 px on each side, up to 4 GB | [TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-media-transfer-guide) |
| Photo post | up to 35 photos; Help Center gives no dimensions; via the API at most 1080p and 20 MB per photo | [TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/content-posting-api-media-transfer-guide) |
| Video cover | does not say (it is a frame picked from the video) | [TikTok Help](https://www.tiktok.com/support/faq_detail?id=7636670084584479253&lang=en) |
| In-Feed video (ads) | vertical 9:16, at least 540×960 (recommended); horizontal 16:9, at least 960×540; square 1:1, at least 640×640; up to 500 MB | [TikTok Ads (ads)](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/tiktok-auction-in-feed-ads) |
| Image carousel (ads) | 1200×628, 640×640 or 720×1280; 2 to 35 images | [TikTok Ads (ads)](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/specifications-for-carousel-ads?lang=en) |

TikTok publishes no recommended video size for regular posts — the popular "1080×1920" is a good full-screen 9:16 choice, but not a number from its documentation.

## YouTube

| Item | Size according to YouTube | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Video thumbnail | 3840×2160, at least 640 px wide; 16:9 ratio | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72431?hl=en) |
| Shorts thumbnail | 2160×3840, at least 640 px tall; 9:16 ratio | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72431?hl=en) |
| Thumbnail file | up to 2 MB from a phone (10 MB for podcasts), up to 50 MB from a computer; for example JPG or PNG | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72431?hl=en) |
| Channel banner | at least 2048×1152 (16:9); safe area for text and logos 1235×338; recommended 2560×1440; up to 6 MB | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10456525?hl=en) |
| Profile picture | displayed at 98×98; up to 15 MB; JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG, no animation; no recommended size given | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10456525?hl=en) |
| Video watermark | at least 150×150, a square under 1 MB | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10456525?hl=en) |
| Post image | up to 16 MB; JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP; 1:1 suggested | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7124474?hl=en) |

The often-repeated "1280×720 and 2 MB" is not what YouTube's help page says today: it lists 3840×2160, and 2 MB applies only to phone uploads. A 1280×720 thumbnail still passes (over 640 px wide, 16:9). Vertical videos with a 16:9 thumbnail get an automatic 4:5 one on the home page.

## Pinterest

| Item | Size according to Pinterest | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pin (image) | recommended 2:3, 1000×1500; taller than 2:3 may be cut off; PNG or JPEG; up to 20 MB from a computer, 32 MB in the app | [Pinterest Help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/pinterest-product-specs) |
| Profile picture | does not say | [Pinterest Help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/article/edit-your-profile) |
| Profile cover (business account) | at least 800×450, 16:9 recommended | [Pinterest Help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/personalize-your-profile) |
| Board cover | does not say | [Pinterest Help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/article/edit-a-board) |
| Idea ad (9:16) | recommended 1080×1920 | [Pinterest Help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/pinterest-product-specs) |

The Pin spec sits on the ads page, but Pinterest says the format also serves organic reach — it is the only official Pin size.

## How to make images in every size at once

Don't crop one design into six formats by hand. In Shareglint any template from the [gallery](https://shareglint.com/en/templates), or your own HTML and CSS ([HTML to image](https://shareglint.com/en/html-to-image)), can be rendered in ready-made sizes: og 1200×630, square 1080×1080, portrait 1080×1350, story 1080×1920, pinterest 1000×1500, youtube 1280×720 — [one template, every size](https://shareglint.com/en/features/one-template-every-size). The `sizes` parameter returns several files from one request, and a size that already exists costs no quota:

```bash
curl -X POST "https://shareglint.com/v1/images?wait=true" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OG_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "template": "blog-og",
    "modifications": { "title": "New autumn 2026 collection" },
    "sizes": ["og", "square", "portrait", "story", "pinterest"]
  }'
```

Against the tables above: `og` (1200×630) meets the link preview minimums; `portrait` (1080×1350, 4:5) fits Instagram's 1.91:1 to 3:4 range; `story` (1080×1920) is the 9:16 Meta and TikTok want for stories and vertical ads, though Meta recommends 1440×2560 for ads; `pinterest` (1000×1500) is exactly Pinterest's recommendation; `youtube` (1280×720) clears the 640 px minimum width; PNG, JPEG or WebP comes out at twice the template size, 2560×1440 — still below the 3840×2160 YouTube now lists. The Free plan includes 100 images a month, paid plans start at $9 a month ([pricing](https://shareglint.com/en/pricing)); the calls are described in the [API documentation](https://shareglint.com/en/docs).

## Where these numbers come from, and why so many say "does not say"

We read every value on 2026-11-04 on the platforms' own help, ads and documentation pages — no blogs, aggregators or AI summaries. When a platform publishes nothing (Instagram profile picture, Facebook event cover, TikTok video), we say so. A blog number can be a sensible hint, but you cannot tell its origin or age — several such "known facts" could not be confirmed at the source.

If a platform's page shows a different number, trust the platform — and tell us, we will fix the table. The link preview table is updated together with the [OG image size](https://shareglint.com/en/og-image-size) page; check your own page's preview with the free [OG Checker](https://shareglint.com/en/tools/og-checker).

## FAQ

### What size should a Facebook post image be?

Facebook's Help Center gives no recommended size for a photo in a regular post. The Meta Ads Guide recommends a 4:5 ratio at 1440×1800 pixels for a feed image (at least 600 px wide). For a link preview image (og:image) Meta recommends 1200×630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio.

### What size is a Facebook cover photo?

According to Facebook Help, a Page cover photo is 16:9 on desktop and 2.4:1 on mobile, must be at least 400×150 pixels, and loads fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851×315 pixels under 100 KB. A personal profile cover photo must be at least 720 pixels wide.

### What size is a Facebook event cover image?

Meta does not publish an event cover photo size on any of its help pages (checked 2026-11-04). Numbers going around the web, such as 1920×1005 or 1200×628, come from blogs and from a Meta AI summary built from user posts, not from an official specification.

### What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube gives a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels for videos and 2160×3840 for Shorts, at least 640 pixels wide (videos) or tall (Shorts), with a 16:9 ratio for videos and 9:16 for Shorts. The file can be up to 2 MB when uploaded from a phone and up to 50 MB from a computer, for example JPG or PNG.

### What size should an Instagram photo be?

Instagram keeps the original resolution of photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which means 1080 pixels wide and 566 to 1440 pixels tall. Other ratios are cropped; smaller photos are enlarged to 320 px and larger ones scaled down to 1080 px.
